Sports: Then
&
Now

By Steve Joseph

What would you do if you had to know the breaking sports news? Switch to a sports channel or perhaps just login for sports news online? But it hadnt always been so easy.

Over the centuries sports has received mixed responses from the public. In the Medieval Age, sports hardly received any attention as people were busy toiling for a living. Sporting activities gained prominence only in the Victorian Age when weekends were declared as holidays and the government also sanctioned sporting events. Then too local games held in the villages hardly had a wider audience.

However in the later centuries, technological advancement gave rise to an increase in world wide exposure for all kinds of sports. Newspapers carried the breaking sports headlines in separate columns. People could also subscribe to sports journals & magazines that gave the current sports news. All the sports news was delivered at the doorstep. Then with the invention of the television, people could enjoy the luxury of sitting & watching any game in any country right in their living rooms! Sports soon gained commercial value as sponsors were now found for every event. Soon private sports channels were launched that were dedicated to solely providing current & breaking sports news.

With wireless and mobile technology, now telephone service providers also offer premium SMS packs that give you the breaking sports headlines daily on your phone. Many IVR services also make it possible to actually listen in to live sports commentary. With increasing no. of telecom networks and an equally escalating demand from the consumers, these services are provided at competitive rates. So its simple & easy to get the current sports news at your fingertips!

The popularity of the Internet and the growing no. of home-based internet connections soon led sports lovers to opt for sports news online. The big companies recognized this phase and a plethora of websites thus came up that provided the current sports news. From local rugby games to international sporting events like the Olympics, these sites have the news from every arena. Videos of previous matches, exclusive photo gallery & related player statistics are all to be found at one place.

Extreme sports like bungee jumping, sky surfing, mountain biking etc, have also been taken up by online sites. Such sports are not always covered by the newspapers or the sports channels that mostly concentrate on the breaking sports news on a commercial basis. But online, one can find sites dedicated to extreme sports. Many sites offer membership and the chance to form your own sports community. An extreme sports community allows people to share tips and sporting experiences online. Registered users can upload their own videos and blogs that is shared among the other extreme sports community members.

With technology advancing everyday its anybodys guess what the next generation sports coverage will be like. As ground breaking records and breaking sports headlines are made everyday, it is to seen it reaches the masses in future.

Effective 10 Point Follow Up Checklist

By Ken Solman

Youve done everything youve learned so far, when it comes to following up with contacts, subscribers and paying customers. But youre just not seeing the results that all the articles say!

The truth is it takes more than techniques to drive your follow up into its zone. It takes a sympathetic understanding of your customer and some very fine details you can use to pick and fine-tune your efforts.

Theres a whole symphony of nuances that go into making the perfect blend that results in a successful follow up style. The more energy you direct towards your follow up, the more targeted your results will become. Part of it will be techniques, tactics and strategies and part of it will be good old intuition.

The sort thats born out of really knowing your customer.

Here is a small checklist to help you on your path to fantastic follow up. Look it over and see if theres any new tip or suggestion youd like to use:

1. When you invite customers to ask questions, do you really mean that? Have you given them a way to reach you easily, without jumping through hoops?

2. Did you follow up within 24 hours to make sure your customer was able to download your product successfully? Use your software without problems, if thats what you were selling? If you sold a physical product, did you allow just enough time for it to arrive; then contact the customer to make sure it did?

3. When you send a reminder, do you make sure its simply courteous, rather than bugging your subscriber to buy?

4. Before you started your follow up, have you made sure youre visible in the online eye? Do you use social networks like Twitter to provide a further element of personal contact? Do you have a Facebook page for your business?

5. Do you provide the personal touch? Not spill your guts about your divorce, but share small things about yourself they can relate to? Admit mistakes so they can benefit from your experience? Laugh at yourself occasionally?

6. Do you have a sales funnel that includes follow up? Do you actually follow it or is it stuffed in your desk drawer?

7. Do you analyze your results? Do you revisit and revise your methods as needed? Work hard to keep your communication fresh?

8. Do you follow through with your follow up? Provide what you promise? Make sure its the most focused and useful material you can provide?

9. Do you really know what makes your target customer tick? As in, right now, today (not a month ago)?

10. Do you take action on everything you plan for your follow up? Do you just do it?

Thinking about everything in your checklist will not automatically make your follow ups treble their results But being aware of these points and taking action when necessary while also putting your customer in the place of honor will help you take several steps closer.
